The 2012-2013 school year has been a busy one for the Nickels for Nails/Dollars for Doors school fundraising program. So far, four schools in Santa Clarita, one in Palmdale and two in the San Fernando Valley have completed or are planning on participating in this fundraising drive.
Currently, Plum Canyon Elementary has raised over $500 for Habitat veteran homes in Santa Clarita, leading the way for Habitat for Humanity youth fundraising in North LA County. Other schools that are helping Habitat make homeownership possible are Pico Canyon Elementary and Harvard Westlake.
Canyon High School is in the middle of their drive, while Stevenson Ranch School, St. Mary School in Palmdale, and Calabasas High School are committed to participate later this year.
Thank you to all of our amazing schools and Youth United Groups!
Nickels for Nails is the youth-led fundraising component of Youth United, our initiative that mobilizes youth ages 5-25 to fully fund and build a Habitat home. Thousands of students, teachers, parents, and youth workers in the Los Angeles area have been engaging in fun community building activities to raise funds for our Youth United Habitat home! It’s easy to help, and even the youngest child can understand the purpose, as the jar fills up and the kids receive updates on the house being built.
This is a wonderful opportunity for students to see how donating extra nickels can make a life-altering difference for a deserving family.
Teachers, youth group coordinators and students who sign up will receive a coin collection container for their classroom, along with a how-to guide about starting a successful fund drive. Teachers can also receive special curriculum to educate their students about the growing housing crisis in California and how everyone Youth United mobilizes young people to fund and build homes with their local Habitat for Humanity affiliate while learning how to advocate for affordable housing and assisting with events and community outreach activities. Youths learn leadership and teamwork skills, and gain a better understanding of their community and poverty housing. Our Campus Chapters are entirely student organized and funded. All Campus Chapter members must engage in four core activities: advocacy, education, fundraising, and building homes (activities for students under 16 are available).
