It was my honor to attend the grand opening of Habitat for Humanity’s new Chatsworth ReStore retail shop on June 30. ReStore offers new and gently used building materials, appliances, antiques, plus home and office furnishings, donated from private individuals, manufacturers and television productions. Proceeds from ReStore fund Habitat for Humanity’s programs such as “Habitat for Heroes” and “A Brush with Kindness”, which support home construction and renovation for veterans and low-income residents.
“A Brush with Kindness,” helps homeowners at risk of losing their homes due to disasters or emergencies. In March, as part of “Habitat for Heroes,” Habitat broke ground on a dozen units in Sylmar, to be set-aside for incoming and disabled veterans. Next year, it expects to build 85 veterans homes in Newhall. Its Habitat for Heroes has become a model for the more than 300 Habitat chapters across the country.
The San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys Habitat for Humanity chapter has so far built 214 homes, and the ReStore in Chatsworth is now part of the national Habitat organization’s network of more than 700 stores. ReStore helps keep bulky items out of landfills and provides homeowners with affordable construction materials, furnishings and appliances while supporting Habitat’s important programs.
