July 2, 2012, CA – Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys opened a brand new Habitat ReStore, Saturday, June 30, at 9606 De Soto Ave. in Chatsworth. Congressmen Brad Sherman and Howard Berman, CA State Senator, Fran Pavley, CA State Assemblyman, Bob Blumenfield and City Council Member Mitch Englander spoke and cut the ribbon alongside the Chatsworth Chamber of Commerce.
The first day was a great success, community members, Habitat families, Dignitaries, Habitat Board Members and more came to check out the great items and many unique treasures sold at the local store. The opening day items ranged from custom bars and gaming furniture to flat screen TVs, beautiful brand name bedroom sets and furniture, to hand crafted dining room tables and chairs. DIYers (Do it yourselfers) will love the ReStore’s large inventory of unique tiles, ceiling fans, doors, windows, flooring and more and local handyman will find the tools and hardware section a great steal for bits and pieces that would cost twice as much at the local hardware store.
The Habitat ReStore is a social enterprise of Habitat for Humanity. It was established to be a self-sustaining funding source of HFH and to provide our local community with low-cost building and home improvement materials as part of our NRI Neighborhood Revitalization efforts. The Restore sells donated materials including new and gently used furniture, appliances, lumber, hardware, vintage and unique items to the public. All prices are at least 50% off retail value and all proceeds from the ReStore are used towards Habitat for Humanity’s mission to end substandard housing worldwide. Jobs are created for veterans and low-income working people—who are our target populations for advancement of economic growth and self-sufficiency. These jobs include skills training and a career ladder in retail management. To reduce building costs and stock the ReStore, Habitat for Humanity San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys relies on donations of tools, doors, windows, lighting, furniture, kitchen and bath cabinets and other home improvement materials. Donations are tax-deductible and a great way to reduce urban blight and keep decent products out of landfills.
About Habitat ReStore
Habitat ReStore is a building surplus supply store that creates a self-sustaining funding source for the purchase of land and the building of affordable housing for low-income and veteran families in our community. The ReStore model, developed by Habitat for Humanity Int’l, is a turnkey operation. ReStore will give back to the community by offering job training and programs for the area. The ReStore will be a recycling center for the San Fernando Valley with proceeds enabling the construction of houses for low-income and veteran families. Building materials and home appliances are donated by retail businesses, manufacturers (new, overstocked and discontinued), contractors, individuals and other organizations (including the Entertainment Industry). The store will accept donations of new and used building materials, fixtures, furniture, appliances, tools and other surplus items appropriate to its market segment, and offer them to the public at bargain prices. To donate materials or learn more call Sherijo Damico at 818-884-8808.
About Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys (SF/SCV)
Habitat SF/SCV is a separately incorporated affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Our affiliate is one of only 5% of Habitats internationally that have built or rebuilt over 100 homes (with 214 in our history). Even fewer Habitats build large neighborhoods of homes, and no other does so in an enriched environment that teaches a 12-month program of targeted self-sufficiency skills. We are currently working on our 9th neighborhood in North Los Angeles County and are starting a new program to benefit our local veterans called “Habitat for Heroes”.
