This month we would like to recognize an outstanding construction volunteer: Robert Kalz.
As a family man, married for 25 years and a Veteran, himself, Kalz knows the importance of veteran families getting a chance to own their own home. Kalz served in the Marine Corps for 20 years, including one combat tour in Iraq. He started volunteering with Habitat in Orange County in the early 90s and has built in states throughout the country off and on since then, as his duties with the Marines permitted. He has recently started coming regularly to build with our affiliate about two days a week.
“ I first learned about Habitat on the news many years ago. I remember the story because they showed Jimmy Carter helping to build houses. I had some experience in construction and wanted to help,” says Kalz.
His favorite part of volunteering is driving by the site and knowing that he helped build those houses. Kalz says volunteering with this affiliate has taught him new skills, as this is the first time he has worked on pre-framing duties such as plumbing and concrete.
He recommends volunteering to anyone who would like to help out.
“Come out and help, you will get great satisfaction in knowing that you have helped a service member get a new home.”
Thank you Robert!!
